MEDON Marine e-Data Observatory Network

The project MeDON aims to develop, test and disseminate a new concept of coastal monitoring based on a network of innovative real-time cabled marine observatories, and orientated towards end users.

Objectives

MeDON is a phased project, with a global duration of 6 to 7 years. Phase I, co-financed by the ERDF, started in November 2009 and will be completed in October 2012.

In Phase I (ongoing project), focuses on:

  • Setting up the partnership and a network of end-users/ stakeholders
  • Sharing experience, pooling knowledge, building capacity
  • Technical developments, feasibility study, budget and identification of funding for Phase II
  • Demonstration and early testing of the proof-of-concept via a pilot site in France.
  • Public outreach and dissemination of the results

MeDON II will then address:

  • Installation of 2 long-term mirror observatories
  • Development of a consortium of SMEs for commercialisation
  • Dissemination of the proof-of-concept to other sites in the Channel space and Europe to develop the observatory network
  • Reinforcement of the partnership
