AMPHORE
MPAs and Fisheries Management through Optimization of Resources and Ecosystems.

MPAs fulfill an essential role in safeguarding biodiversity. The question of what their role might be in managing fisheries is now being asked by AMPHORE - `MPAs and Fisheries Management through Optimization of Resources and Ecosystems'

Objective

MPAs fulfill an essential role in safeguarding biodiversity. The question of what their role might be in managing fisheries is now being asked by AMPHORE - `MPAs and Fisheries Management through Optimization of Resources and Ecosystems'. (AMP et gestion Halieutique par Optimisation des Ressources et des Ecosystèmes).

The project partners, under the management of the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD - Institute for Economic Development Research), will define the biological, ecological, economic and social indicators relating to fisheries management in two French estuaries in la Vilaine and la Gironde and six African estuaries in Guinea, Gambia and Senegal. The modelling of these indicators based on multiple criteria will be complemented by a study of the economic effects of establishing four nature reserves in France and Africa. AMPHORE will pave the way for advances in the methods used to set up and manage MPA in order to ensure they play a role as full as possible at an environmental, economic and social level and become genuine ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) tools at a national and international level.

Work packages

  1. Define and calibrate biological, ecological, economical and social indicators for governance and develop multi-criteria tools for characterization and management of these ecosystem.
  2. Test MPA effectiveness by analyzing inside and outside the reserves the evolution of populations and evaluating economics activities and induced benefits.

Define a governance framework and the mechanisms conditioning definition, objectives and functioning of MPAs. Characterize governance systems and proposed public policies alternatives.
