Awareness and citizen sciences

Work Package 4: Heighten awareness of marine protected areas: create a sense of ownership and shared expectations through citizen science programmes.

Stakeholder and local community involvement in MPA management undoubtedly contributes to its success. PANACHE called on its partners' knowledge and experience to identify and mobilise the priority groups to be involved.

Although practices may differ from one area to another, PANACHE introduced a common methodology for these citizen science programmes. In particular, coastal residents and amateur divers, all of them volunteers, were tasked with exploring intertidal and sublittoral zones within and around existing and potential marine protected areas.

The project partners also relied on professional educators to raise coastal resident and public awareness of marine environment conservation issues, the importance of marine protected areas, and good everyday practices.
